Part III: Background Checks on Health Care Professionals
Recently, I saw posted the following on the Florida Department of Health (DOH) website:
The following professions are not subject to criminal background screening at initial and/or renewal of licensure:
•Acupuncture
•Anesthesiologist Assistant
•Athletic Training
•Clinical Laboratory Personnel
•Clinical Nurse Specialist
•Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling
•Dentistry/Dental Laboratory
•Dietetics/Nutrition
•Electrolysis/Electrolysis Facility
•Emergency Medical Technician
•Hearing Aid Specialist Respiratory Care
•Massage Therapy/Massage Establishment
•Medical Physicist
•Midwifery
•Naturopath
•Nursing Home Administrator
•Occupational Therapy
•Office Surgery Registration
•Opticianry/Optician Establishment
•Optometry
•Pain Management Clinic
•Paramedic
•Pharmacist
•Physical Therapy
•Physician Assistant
•Psychology
•Radiological Technician
•School Psychology
•Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology
However, what you should know is that you may be working for an organization or entity that is licensed/regulated not by DOH, but by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA). AHCA routinely requires the organizations it licenses to run background screenings on its employees. If an employee has a criminal background history, AHCA then issues that employee a letter indicating they are disqualified from working in Florida. In which case, the employee must apply to AHCA for what is known as an Exemption from Disqualification (letter from AHCA indicating you can work in Florida).
